Massive stars use up their hydrogen fuel very quickly and during nuclear fusion, it’s turn that fuel to iron in its core. Once the core becomes complete iron, it can no longer counter-act gravity so it collapses. This sends shock waves through the star, triggering a massive explosion and a supernova.
