Is there a relationship between the direction of movement and pattern of earthquakes? Volcanoes? Describe and Explain.

    Earthquakes and volcnoes tend to lie on "rings of fire" which are boundaries between continental tectonic plates. Presumably, if two plates (trillions of tons) are moving into each other along one line of activity, they'll be moving away from each other (probably small amounts, but tons) somewhere else. Factors which could cause the things to move could include the stuff that the plates actually lie on top of - if it's liquid then they can slide over it. Also, there's the earth's rotation to maybe consider. As the earth rotates, could the plates sort of "slip along" with the rotation. If a hole develops in the plate, then up pops a lot of molten iron, and possibly "voila" a volcanoe.
