A sign that weighs 400N is hanging from two cables that form angles of 24 degrees with the horizontal. What is the tension in each cable?

    Refer to the diagram shown below.

    The tension, T, in each cable is the same because of vertical symmetry.

    For vertical equilibrium,

    2T sin (24°) = 400 N

    0.8135 T = 400

    T = 491.7 N

    Answer: 491.7 N
