- - Multiply the number of km by the fraction (1000m/km).

- - Then multiply the new quantity by the fraction (3.28 ft/m).

- - Then multiply the new quantity by the fraction (12 in/ft).

(Each of these fractions has the same quantity on top and bottom, so it's equal to ' 1 ' and doesn't change the value of anything. But it does change the units.)

- - Simplify the resulting mess by canceling common factors out of the top and bottom. You should be left with only the unit "inch". If you have anything different, then you've committed a boo-boo somewhere in your work. You'll have to go back, find it, and correct it.

I get about 13.8 inches, but I don't guarantee anything. You'll have to check it. That number may be wrong, but the answer isn't important. The important part of this whole exercise is HOW to do it.
