If the waves coming from the Sun were mechanical waves, they would not reach Earth because mechanical waves needs a medium to propagate, while the space is basically vacuum. In fact, electromagnetic waves (that are the waves coming from the Sun) can travel in vacuum, while mechanical waves cannot.
