In last week's Homecoming victory, All Conference, the star halfback of South's football team, broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and darted upfield untouched. He averaged 9.8 m/s for an 80-yard (73 m) score. Determine the time for Al to run from the line of scrimmage to the end zone.

    In this problem we are going to suppose that the star halfback moved in a straight line. From that assumption we can say the following:

    ''He averaged 9.8 m/s ... '' so the average speed is 9.8 m/s

    '' ... for an 80-yard (73 m) score'' so the distance is 73 m

    There is an equation that relates average speed, distance and time in

    straight line movements with constant acceleration

    Average speed = Distance/time replacing the data

    9.8 m/s = 73 m/t

    t = 73 m / (9.8 m/s)

    t = 7.44897 s = 7.45 s
