What is the primary cause for the change in seasons?

    The tilt of the earth's axis. As the earth faces a different direction the seasons change.

    The fact that the Earth's rotation axis is not straight up and down compared to the plane of our orbit around the sun. Instead, the axis is about 23-1/2 degrees away from being straight up and down.
