    The bottom of the ocean is 6 km

    Explanation:

    Given data,

    The time taken by the SONAR to reach the bottom of the ocean and return is, t = 8 s

    The speed of the sound in water, v = 1500 m/s

    The formula for distance traveled by the SONAR is,

    d = v x t

    Substituting the values

    d = 1500 x 8

    = 12,000 m

    The half the distance the SONAR covered is equal to the depth of the ocean

    s = d/2

    = 12000/2

    = 6000 m

    Hence, the bottom of the ocean is 6 km
