A 2 kilogram cat is resting on top of a bookshelf that is 1 meters high. What is the cat's gravitational potential energy relative to the floor?

    Given:

    Mass of the cat: 2 Kg

    Height from the ground: 1 meter

    Now we know that

    Potential energy = mgh

    Where m is the mass of the cat

    g is the acceleration due to gravity m/s^2

    h is the height from the ground in meters

    Substituting the given values in the above formula we get

    Potential energy = 2 x 9.8 x 1 = 19.6 J
