Two people are 16km apart on a straight road. They start walking at the same time. If they walk towards each other, they will meet in 2 hours, but if they walk in the same direction (so that the distance between them is decreasing), they will meet in 8 hours. Find their walking speeds.

    Their working speed = 5 km / hour and 3 km / hour

    Explanation:

    Let their speeds be x and y

    2 (x+y) = 16

    x+y = 8 ... (A)

    Assuming x is > y

    8x - 8y = 16

    x - y = 2 ... (B)

    (A) + (B) 2x = 10

    x = 5 km / hour y = 3 km / hour
