An 800 kg car and a 1,600 kg truck move toward one another, both traveling at 15 m/s. In what direction will the two vehicles move after they collide? Show your calculations to prove your answer.

    Answer: The two vehicles moved in the direction of the truck after collision

    Explanation: Given that

    Mass of the car M1 = 800 kg

    Mass of the truck M2 = 1600 kg

    Since the two vehicles move together after collision, then, the collision is inelastic. Therefore

    M1U1 - M2U2 = (M1 + M2) V

    U1 = U2 = 15 m/s

    (800 * 15) - (1600 * 15) = (800 + 1600) V

    12000 - 24000 = 2400V

    2400V = - 12000

    V = - 12000/2400

    V = - 5 m/s

    Since V is negative, and M2U2 is also negative, therefore,

    The two vehicles moved in the direction of the truck after collision
