A gas in a piston-cylinder device is compressed, and as a result its temperature rises. is this a heat or work interaction?

    The answer is both. The energy in the system is composed of heat and work. because of the temperature difference, the energy would be in the form of heat. Because of the force in executing the compression in the same direction, there is also work done.
