Example:

If a cold beaker of water is placed on a bunsen burner, the amount of heat input to the water depends on the rate at which natural gas is fed to the bunsen burner. Because this rate can be manipulated or controlled, it is an independent variable.

In response to the rate of heat input, the temperature of the water rises and can be measured. Because the temperature depends on the rate at which natural gas is fed to the bunsen burner, the temperature is a dependent variable.
