Celestial bodies such as Pluto and Eris resembles like planets but lack in certain categories hence are termed as Dwarf planets.

They are neither perfect planets not satellites. They are termed as trans - Neptunian objects as it has a greater average distance than Neptune.

They have high masses and gravity. Currently there are five bodies recognized as dwarf planets. They are placed in between the category of planets and satellite because though they have enough mass and gravity, they have not cleared their neighboring region. It must have sufficient mass to overcome compressive strength and attain hydrostatic equilibrium.
