    Superposition can be use to determine the age of rock. The law of Superposition is a kind relative dating.

    Principle of Superposition of an undisturbed succession of sedimentary rock states that the higher layers or strata are of lesser age because they must be laid down on the layer or strata below, which is therefore of higher age. This can be used in cross-sections. It must be so, so that the rocks at the bottom will have to be there before the rocks on top of them could be deposited.

    Principle of Superposition is one of the principles of geology. Others include The Law of Lateral Continuity, The Law of Original Horizontality and so on.
