    The velocity of the tennis ball after the collision is 4.8 m/s downward.

    Explanation:

    When a basketball collides with tennis ball, the collision is perfectly elastic.

    From the law of conservation of linear momentum, and considering opposite direction of two balls

    m₁u₁ - m₂u₂ = m₁v₁ - m₂v₂

    where;

    m₁ is the mass of the tennis ball = 8.01 kg

    u₁ is the initial velocity of the tennis ball = 5 m/s

    m₂ is the mass of the basketball = 0.8 kg

    u₂ is the initial velocity of the basketball = 5 m/s

    v₁ is the final velocity of the tennis ball after collision = ?

    v₂ is the final velocity of the basketball after collision = 3 m/s

    m₁u₁ - m₂u₂ = m₁v₁ - m₂v₂

    (8.01*5) - (0.8*5) = (8.01 * v₁) - (0.8*3)

    40.05 - 4 = 8.01v₁ - 2.4

    36.05 + 2.4 = 8.01v₁

    38.45 = 8.01v₁

    v₁ = 38.45/8.01

    v₁ = 4.8 m/s

    The positive sign, indicates downward velocity.

    Therefore, the velocity of the tennis ball after the collision is 4.8 m/s downward.
