A heavy crate rests on the bed of a flatbed truck. When the truck accelerates, the crate remains where it is on the truck, so it, too, accelerates. What force causes the crate to accelerate? ... ?

    The answer to the question above is simply Friction.

    For friction is the force that opposes the motion of an object. To stop a moving object, a force must act in the opposite direction to the direction of motion. Friction is the force that opposes the motion of an object.
