The difference between a solid and a gas is that the particles are more conjoined together in a solid, when in a gas the particles are more spread out.

The difference involves the distance the molecules are able to move within. A gas has molecules that move so much you generally can't see it. Solid they move such a small distance they bond into a hard object.
