With an average acceleration of â1.2 m/s², how long will it take a cyclist to bring a bicycle with an initial speed of 6.5 m/s to a complete stop?

    Using the equation of motion,

    v = u + at ... Equation 1,

    Where v = Final velocity, u = initial velocity, a = acceleration, t = time.

    Making t the subject of the equation,

    t = (v-u) / a ... Equation 2

    Note: When the the bicycle is brought to a complete stop, the final velocity of the bicycle is 0 m/s and the bicycle is decelerating.

    Given: v = 0 m/s, u = 6.5 m/s, a = - 1.2 m/s² (decelerating).

    Substituting into equation 2

    t = (0-6.5) / -1.2

    t = - 6.5/-1.2

    t = 5.42 s.

    Hence the time take for the cyclist to bring the bicycle to complete stop = 5.42 s
