How are magnetic stripes near mid-ocean ridges evidence for sea-floor spreading?

    Every couple thousand years, Earth's magnetic field switches poles.

    A magnetic material called hematite found near mid-ocean ridges records positive and negative in stripes parallel to the ridge, evidence that over time the crust was produced and pushed away from that ridge over time.
