Does lightning come from the ground? I have heard that lightning comes from the ground up. But when it strikes something on land, it's the top of that object that gets destroyed.

    I don't know the ratio between the modes, but lightning can consist of an electric current from cloud to ground, or from ground to cloud, or between two clouds.

    Lightning does not come from the ground. It comes from the sky, mostly during thunderstorms. Watch the sky the next time you see a thunderstorm. You might see the lightning strike.
