What do we now understand to be the primary difference between normal galaxies and active galaxies?

    active galaxies are extremely bright and travel faster than normal galaxies. The mass of active galaxies is confined to a smaller space and they have some activity in their nuclei which produces an enormous amount of energy in a very small volume of space.
