One of the major reasons America moved toward independence was the issue of taxation. People in the colonies believed that the Crown (England) was taking too much from them while they were left to do the hard work of carving out a new land. They did not feel this was right and wanted to keep more and more for themselves, so they moved toward separation from England and independence.
