Use the exact values you enter to make later calculations. Jack and Jill are on two different floors of their high rise office building and looking out of their respective windows. Jack sees a flower pot go past his window ledge and Jill sees the same pot go past her window ledge a little while later. The time between the two observed events was 4.4 s. Assume air resistance is negligible. (a) If the speed of the pot as it passes Jill's window is 65.0 m/s, what was its speed when Jack saw it go by?

    21.88 m/s

    Explanation:

    Since the pot is falling under free fall, its velocity is increasing at the rate of 9.8 m / s ie its acceleration is a = 9.8 m s⁻²

    Time duration t = 4.4 s

    Final velocity v = 65 m/s

    Initial velocity (at the beginning of 4.4 s) u = ?

    Acceleration a = 9.8 ms⁻²

    v = u + at

    65 = u + 9.8 x 4.4

    = u + 43.12

    u = 65 - 43.12

    = 21.88 m/s

    its the speed of flower pot when Jack saw it go by.
