Chet plans an experimental investigation to see how well a new fertilizer works on daisies.     In order to establish the control group, Chet should leave out the fertilizer.

    A control group serves as a datum to which the results of the experiments are compared. In order to establish a control group, the dependent variable, which in this case is the fertilizer added, is removed or kept at a normal level (normally there is no fertilizer supplied to daisies).
