A boat has a mass of 6800 kg. its engines generate a drive force of 3300 n, due west, while the wind exerts a force of 920 n, due east, and the water exerts a resistive force of 1200 n due east. what is the magnitude and direction of the boat's acceleration?

    Refer to the figure below, which shows a plan view of the boat.

    Let a = acceleration of the boat, due west.

    Then

    (3300 - 910 - 1200 N) = (6800 kg) * (a m/s²)

    a = 1190/6800 = 0.175 m/s²

    Answer: 0.175 m/s², due west.
