The independent variable is the variable that the person who is conducting the experiment changes to see if it has an effect on another variable. It's classified as the "input" or "cause."

The dependent variable is the variable the person who is conducting the experiment measures. If there is a change in the dependent variable, this is dependent upon the independent variable. It's classified as the "output" or "effect."
