A thermodynamic system gains 1500j of heat from the surroundings, and does 3500j of work as a result. -

    The change in internal energy is calculated by getting the difference of the heat added to the system by the amount of work done by the system.

    a. change in internal energy = 1500 J - (+3500 J)

    change in internal energy = - 2000 J

    b. change in internal energy = 1500 J - (-3500 J)

    change in internal energy = 5000 J
