A long wire lying along the x-axis carries a current of 3.40 A in the + x direction. There is a uniform magnetic field present, given by B=0.003i + 0.004j + 0.002k, where i, j, k are the unit vectors along the cartesian coordinate axes') in units of Tesla. Calculate the y-component of the magnetic force acting on a segment of wire of length L = 21.5 cm.

    Expression for magnetic force

    F = L (I X B)

    B magnetic field and I is current

    Here I = 3.4 i

    B =.003i +.004 j +.002 k

    F = 21.5 X 10⁻² x 3.4 i X (.003i +.004 j +.002 k)

    = (.2924 k -.1462 j) x 10⁻²

    so y component of magnetic force = - 0.1462 x 10⁻² N
