At a certain elevation, the pilot of a balloon has a mass of 125 lb and a weight of 119 lbf. What is the local acceleration of gravity, in ft/s2, at that elevation? If the balloon drifts to another elevation where g = 32.05 ft/s2, what is her weight, in lbf, and mass, in lb?

    0.952 ft/s^2, 125 lb 4006.25 lbf

    Explanation:

    mass of balloon, m = 125 lb

    Weight of balloon, W = 119 lbf

    As we know that

    Weight = mass x acceleration due to gravity

    W = m g

    119 = 125 g

    g = 0.952 ft/s^2

    The value of local acceleration due to gravity is 0.952 ft/s^2.

    When g = 32.05 ft/s^2

    mass = 125 lb

    Mass of a material remains constant but the weight changes.

    W = m x g

    W = 125 x 32.05 = 4006.25 lbf
