An object with total mass mtotal = 15.9 kg is sitting at rest when it explodes into three pieces. One piece with mass m1 = 4.6 kg moves up and to the left at an angle of θ1 = 20° above the - x axis with a speed of v1 = 28.1 m/s. A second piece with mass m2 = 5.1 kg moves down and to the right an angle of θ2 = 25° to the right of the - y axis at a speed of v2 = 22.2 m/s. 1) What is the magnitude of the final momentum of the system (all three pieces) ? kg-m/s

    For an excellent understanding of the system, we must first consider that everything that all the objects within it are at rest, which implies directly that the initial moment is zero.

    From this it is logical to intuit that when applying an external force on the system, the speed of the system will be generated to change.

    Thus applying the law of conservation, we understand that

    Initial System Moment = Final System Moment.

    From this we conclude that the final moment is 0.

    Momentum = 0kg-m / s
