Because without confidence people become co-dependent, and have to get their gratification and validation from others. They will find it difficult to do things alone, may become shy and with drawn, or ''clingy'. Being confident in who you are as a person, you can become actual friends with people, instead of them baby sitting you as you follow them around aimlessly. Also, confidence draws people to you, if you aren't confident, it can drive people away.
