What does gravitational potential energy teach you about us on earth?

We are always subject to a gravitational field force. The strength of the field is uniform across the planet for the most part (unless you reach high elevations above the atmosphere and the field force decreases). Increasing elevation on the surface of the planet (ie going up stairs or ladder) will increase your potential energy.
