The pattern of the Earth's ocean tides is the result of the interaction of:
- - the changing strength and direction of the force of gravity toward the sun due to its changing position and distance,
- - the changing strength and direction of the force of gravity toward the moon due to its changing position and distance,
- - the rotation of the Earth,
- - the shapes of the coastal boundaries between the Earth's land masses and its oceans.
