The total mechanical energy is conserved while the apple is falling. The mechanical energy is formed by kinetic energy and potential energy. The apple starts with high potential energy and low (zero) kinetic energy, during the fall the apple gains kinetic energy and loses potential energy in a form that their sum is constant and equal to the total mechanical energy.
