The energy production in cell increased. Food gets transformed to ATP a form of chemical energy as a result of respiration taking place in cells. When food is taken it gets digested and transported to cells by the blood for respiration and energy is released. So the scientist will arrive at the inference that the rate of energy increased by having the afternoon snack.
