A conducting spherical shell of inner radius r1 and outer radius r2 has a charge Q on it. An additional charge, also Q, is then added to the sphere. What is the resulting charge per unit area on the outer surface of the sphere?

    Since the spherical shell is conducting, all the charge will lie on the outer surface.

    Total charge

    = Q + Q = 2Q

    surface area = 4πr₂²

    surface charge density = charge / surface area

    = 2Q / 4πr₂²
