8. When a 100 N bag of nails hangs motionless from a single vertical strand of rope, how many newtons of tension are exerted in the strand? - What if the bag is supported by four vertical strands?

    I assume it is hanging vertically here.

    Since it is hanging vertically the only force acting on the object is gravity, which gives an object weight, measured in Newtons - since we have already been given this value, we know that the only force on the string is the 100N bag. Consequently, the tension in the strand is 100N, if there are 4, it is evenly distributed amongst the strands (assuming they are identical), and so it is 100/4 = 25N
