Super Invar, an alloy of iron and nickel, is a strong material with a very Low coefficient of thermal expansion (0.20x10^-6/°C). A 1.6-m-long tabletop made of this alloy is used for sensitive laser measurements where extremely high tolerance are required. How much will this alloy table expand along expand along its length if the temperature increase 5°C?

    The alloy table will expand by 1.6*10^-6 m along its length if the temperature increase 5°C.

    Explanation:

    let k be the coefficient of thermal expansion

    let T be the change in temperature of the alloy table

    L1 be the initial length of the table

    L be the expanded length of the table

    k = L / (L1*T)

    L = k*L*T

    = (0.20*10^-6) (1.6m) (5)

    = 1.6*10^-6 m

    therefore, The alloy table will expand by 1.6*10^-6 m along its length if the temperature increase 5°C.
