The standard generic elevator these days are called rotating field device. A magnet which on large machines is an electromagnet but, on small one can be a permanent magnet, rotate inside a set of coils, in the interaction of the magnetic field with the coils induces a voltage in them. this voltage can be taken off through an external circuit
