A roller coaster in the figure below starts at the top of a straight track that is inclined 30° with the horizontal. This causes it to accelerate at a rate of 4.9 m/s2 (1/2 g).

What is the roller coaster's speed after 5 s? in m/s.

(b) How far does it travel during that time?

    24.5 m/s

    61.3 m

    Explanation:

    Given:

    v₀ = 0 m/s

    a = 4.9 m/s²

    t = 5 s

    a) Find v.

    v = at + v₀

    v = (4.9 m/s²) (5 s) + 0 m/s

    v = 24.5 m/s

    b) Find Δx.

    Δx = v₀ t + ½ at²

    Δx = (0 m/s) (5 s) + ½ (4.9 m/s²) (5 s) ²

    Δx = 61.3 m
