A wire is oriented along the axis. It is connected to two batteries, and a conventional current of 1.4 A runs through the wire in the direction. Along 0.20 m of the length of the wire there is a magnetic field of 0.58 T in the direction, due to a large magnet nearby. At other locations in the circuit, the magnetic field due to external sources is negligible. What are the direction and magnitude of the magnetic force on the wire

    0.162 N acting in the + x direction.

    Explanation:

    Parameters given:

    Current running in the wire, I = 1.4 A

    Considerable length of wire, L = 0.2 m

    Magnetic field due to magnet, B = 0.58 T

    The magnetic force, F, is given as:

    F = I * L * B

    F = 1.4 * 0.2 * 0.58

    F = 0.162 N

    The magnetic force is positive, hence, it is acting in the same direction as the current, in the + x direction.
