Hydrocarbons explode in oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water.

    a) Balanced equation : 2 C8H18 + 25 O2 - - > 16 CO2 + 18 H2O

    b) Number of mols of octane: 1000 g / 114 g mol-1 = 8.7719 mol

    c) Number of mols of oxygen needed = 12.5 (number of mols of octane) =

    109.64912 mol

    d) at r. t. p, 1 mol - - > 24 dm^3, hence 109.64912 mol - - > 2631.57888 dm^3

2.63 litres of oxygen is needed to burn a kilogram of octane.
