If you visited Mount Shasta City (elevation 900 m [3,000 ft]) and found the outside air temperature to be 27C (81F), what would the air temperature at the summit of Mount Shasta (elevation 4200 m [14,000 ft]) at that moment - - assuming that the temperature conditions with altitude change at an average, or normal lapse rate?

    temperature at height above ground level = Ground Temperature - (height difference * average laps rate)

    where average laps rate = 6.39c/km

    The following data are given data were given

    Shasta city elevation=900m=0.9km

    summit elevation = 4200m=4.2km

    Hence the height differences is 4.2km-0.9km

    Hence the height differences=3.3km

    Using the formula

    temperature at height above ground level = Ground Temperature - (height difference * average laps rate)

    we arrive at

    temperature at height above ground level = 27 - (3.3*6.39)

    temperature at height above ground level = 5.913 C

    converting to Fahrenheit

    (5.913*9/5) + 32=42.6F
