What kind of transformer decreases the voltage of an alternating current

    That device would be called a "step-down" transformer. If you completely took it apart and unwound all the wire in it, you'd find that it has more turns of wire in the primary (higher voltage) side, and fewer turns in the secondary (lower voltage) side.
