A 60 kg skier skis directly down a frictionless slope angled at 12° to the horizontal. Choose the positive direction of the x axis to be downhill along the slope. A wind force with component Fx acts on the skier. What is Fx if the magnitude of the skier's velocity is (a) constant, (b) increasing at a rate of 1.2 m/s2, and (c) increasing at a rate of 2.4 m/s2. Use g = 9.81 m/s2.

    Answer: a = 496.69N

    b = 424.69N

    c = 352.69N

    Explanation: the fx = mgcos (12) - ma

    At constant velocity a = 0

    Therefore fx = mgcos (12) = 60*9.81cos (12) = 496.69N

    Hence a = 496.69N

    b. At a = 1.2m/s2

    We get fx=mgcos (12) - ma

    fx=60*9.81cos (12) - 60*1.2

    Fx=496.69-72=424.69N

    Hence b=424.69N

    c. At a = 2.4m/s2

    Fx=mgcos (12) - ma

    =60*9.81cos (12) - 60*2.4

    =496.69-144=352.69N

    Hence c = 352.69N
