What makes an atom or object neutral?

Atom is neutral due to proton number and electron number being equal.
For example, take helium atom. It has 2 protons. To make it neutral, it must have 2 electrons.
A proton has + 1e charge and an electron has - 1e charge so they cancel each other out and have 0e charge.
