If you have to study definitions you can just keep reading and when you read try to visualize what you are reading, it will be a lot easier.
Also if it is for history you can watch a documentary it will be a whole lot easier, try finding the documentarys that way you'll finish your studying faster and it will have much more effect!
And when you finish studying close all books and notebooks and take a blank paper and write everything that you remember that way you will know what you remember and what you still need to study.
