Archaeologists date the giant Olmec heads from at least 900 BC. These sculptures are a unique feature of the Olmec civilization in Mesoamerica. They range in height from 3.8 to 11.2 ft. The figures are also all wearing different headgear. One theory is that they were leaders or warriors, and another is that they were protective helmets for sports. There are seventeen colossal head sculptures identified from four sites within the area called the Olmec heartland. This is located in what is Veracruz and Tabasco today on the Gulf Coast of Mexico. There is also another potential example of a colossal head found in Guatemala at Tak'alik Ab'aj.
