According to the first paragraph in Thomas Paine's "American Crisis", summer soldiers and sunshine patriots will shrink from the service of their country. During the American revolution, soldiers who became part of the Continental Army during spring or summer, but were away or absent without leave (AWOL) in the fall or winter, were called "summer soldiers". On the other hand, soldiers who supported the patriots when they were winning, but became disloyal and ran away when they were losing, were called "sunshine patriots". Because of summer soldiers and sunshine patriots, George Washington faced a lot of challenges during the Revolution.
